There are four types of characters in most screen stories:

The Hero

  • This is the main character of the story
  • The most relatable character to the audience
  • Usually has the most screen time
  • Drives the plot forward

The Nemesis

  •  This is the character who most stands in the way of the hero’s outer motivation
  •  Could be a villain (bad guy)
  •  Could be an antagonist (not always a bad guy)
  •  Does not have to be revealed immediately (like a whodunnit mystery)

The Reflection

  • This is the character who supports the outer motivation of the hero
  • Could be a friend, coworker, sidekick, spouse, lover, etc.

The Romance

  • This character is at least part of the object of the character’s outer motivation.
