The SPOOOOKY season is upon us! Ghosts and goblins, monsters galore! Pumpkins are smiling, candy is abundant and the air is filled with the smell of caramel apples and ghoulish delight. What better way to celebrate than with a craft that will even make Dracula want to join in the fun — FrankenSlime!  

Welcome foolish mortals to our slime-atory 

This recipe comes from the book Secrets of Slime by Jackie Houston. Check it out for more fun with slime – and more advanced techniques like “taste safe slime”. 

Before we get to the good stuff, there are a few rules to remember:

  • Get your grown-up’s permission before mixing any ingredients. 

  • This slime is NOT edible and should NOT be tasted or eaten.

  • Wash all tools when you’re done.

  • Wash your hands before touching your face. 

  • Slime is a science, so measure each ingredient carefully before adding it to the mix. 

Now, onto the fun!

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup of white Elmer’s glue (or any white school glue)

  • 2 cups of white shaving cream

  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon of saline solution (like Visine) Have your parents make sure the solution contains sodium borate and boric acid

  • Green food coloring (you can use any color you want, like orange for pumpkins. Food coloring may stain skin, clothes, and surfaces) 

  • Optional: Add ins like glitter, scented oils, or small items

Instructions:

Step 1: Mix the glue and shaving cream in a large bowl. (Make sure to level off the shaving cream).

Step 2: Add the food coloring a few drops at a time until you are satisfied with the color. (This batch is a lighter, mint green reminiscent of Frankenstin’s pale skin).

Step 3: Stir in the baking soda and add the saline solution 1/2 of a tablespoon at a time. Eventually the mixture will clump.

Step 4: Mix until the slime comes together and starts coming off the sides of the bowl.

Step 5: Knead the slime with your hands. It will be very sticky at first but will become firmer the more you knead it (it will wash out but still be careful of getting it onto clothes). If necessary, add more saline solution, one teaspoon at a time.

Step 6: Mix in extra items (this slime includes glitter so Frankenstein can have some extra sparkle).

Step 7: Have fun!

Note: The food coloring will stain your hands for a few hours but will eventually fade.
