Online Genealogy Resources Pathfinder

The purpose of this pathfinder is to introduce some of the resources available online for genealogical research. Well-respected websites, URLs, and brief descriptions are listed below.

Online Genealogy Resources

Southern Maryland Studies Center

Located at the College of Southern Maryland Library, the Southern Maryland Studies Center contains a wealth of historical information on Southern Maryland. You can find land records, wills, lists of local newspapers available on microfilm, and genealogy research files listed by surname. The Charles County Historic Society houses their collection here and a volunteer genealogist is available to help customers on Wednesday mornings.

Social Security Death Index

This web site contains records of deceased persons who had social security numbers and whose death was reported to the Social Security Administration. You can search by name and then limit your search by geographic area or birth date.

Ancestry.com

A user friendly web site that makes it easy to search for your ancestors by name and state. You can also browse through the online records such as birth, marriage, death, and immigration. The Library subscribes to the complete version of Ancestry.com. It is available from inside any of the Southern Maryland Public Libraries.

National Archives

A comprehensive genealogical site run by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. Contains helpful hints on how to begin your genealogical research as well as search sites and links for obtaining most federal records (including military, census, and social security records.)

Afrigeneas

Afrigeneas is a great web site for people interested in researching African-American genealogy and African ancestry in America.

Heritage Quest Genealogy

This is a great subscription database available to you free of charge from the Southern Maryland Regional Library! It contains the entire U.S. Census from 1790 – 1930. You can access it from home or office with your library card barcode number.
